At present, the Pioneer Education goes on as an introductory pilot project; subsequently, it will be offered from the beginning of the academic year 2009/2010. The magazine presents the concept of the Pioneer Education as four modules. Additionally, the reader is introduced to a number of educators and teachers who in various ways have implemented tools to innovative courses of education in their daily teaching.
Maria Frøsig of Niels Brock Business College in Copenhagen is one such educator. Following a workshop, she became aware how she could use a simple tool such as the KIE model (Creativity/Innovation/Entrepreneurialism) beneficially in her teaching of entrepreneurship.
Thomas Rose teaches the innovation line at Erritsø Central School. He has witnessed how weak pupils are successful and that the pupils generally are more motivated and flourish. “The greatest challenge for the teacher is to let go”, he states. There are new roles to adopt where the teacher is more of a supervisor and consultant than a traditional teacher.
The magazine also focuses on how it is possible to involve the surrounding society in the education. Næstved Gymnasium (general upper secondary school) observes theme days where they solve issues of current interest and assignments posed by businesses. As a result, the pupils learn to develop concepts and create a product as a team, and afterwards, the businesses visit and give feedback. Headmistress Susanne Stubgaard is enthused with the cooperation and sees it as an investment in the future. In Ikast-Brande municipality, they share the same enthusiasm for the future as regards the use of new teaching methods. Here, innovation in primary and lower secondary schools is a political focus area. “It is the future livelihood of the region”, is one of the arguments.
Finally, the Pioneer Magazine offers a number of tangible tools – including tools from the Creativity Lab at Aalborg University – for use in innovative teaching.
About the Pioneer Campaign
The Danish Ministry of Education’s Pioneer Campaign was launched in the spring 2007. Subsequently, the campaign has become the framework for several networks, professional proposals, and progressions of concept development. The intention is that teachers and educators, through the progression of a teaching project, work with concept development, innovation, and entrepreneurship. The aim of the campaign is to develop and qualify the country's teachers and educators in this field and to create new forums where teachers and educators may develop their ideas and find the requisite sparring. The Pioneer Magazine is one of several initiatives of the Pioneer Campaign.
