Green future mapped out as Copenhagen hosts climate conference

18.06.2009The climate was on the agenda again as Danish Minister for Education Bertel Haarder paid a visit to the Copenhagen Climate Network conference at Copenhagen’s City Hall.

The world is coming to Copenhagen. Before the UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen in December, stakeholders from around the globe convene to network and discuss climate issues.

One such event took place on the 16th of June at Copenhagen’s City Hall where, to name a few, Bertel Haarder, Danish Minister for Development Cooperation Ulla Tørnæs and ambassadors from South Africa and India took part.

In his speech, Bertel Haarder gave examples of how the Danish Ministry of Education has put the Climate on the agenda. For example, he mentioned a new website for climate teachers, a climate seminar for highly talented upper-secondary school pupils, the website for teachers worldwide (teacherscop15.dk) and the projects called ’Green Flag’ and ’Green School’, which aim to bring sustainable changes to schools and into children’s homes.

”It is very important that children and young people who go to school today, and are leaders of to-morrow, understand their responsibility. Nothing indicates that the challenges regarding the climate and energy supply will go away any time soon. We therefore have an important task ensuring young people have the necessary insight, which will prevent them from making the same mistakes, and taking on the same bad habits, we have as adults”, said Bertel Haarder.
